Riley's Retreat Rarotonga offers an affordable, peaceful escape on Rarotonga's 'sunrise' east side, away from the hustle and bustle.

 

Nestled on our property along the quiet back road in the rural farming village of Matavera, the cottage is conveniently located less than 5 mins drive to Muri lagoon, and a few mins stroll to KAPS store/petrol station, Vili's Burger Joint and bus stop.  Avarua town is approx 10 mins drive, and the airport approx 15 mins drive.

 

 Claire and Darryl (along with their loveable, friendly Raro dogs Ollie and Sweetpea) live on the property so are handy for any questions, advice on things to see and do, restaurants and cafes etc, and are happy to assist with any bookings.  Whilst they live next door, they won’t encroach on your privacy. 😊But guests are always welcome to pop in next door for a cuppa or ask for any local advice.

In season, you are welcome to help yourself to juicy lemons and sweet pawpaw growing near your cottage.

The entire area is very peaceful, and you can safely go for walks day or night. If you’re walking at night, please wear bright clothes, turn on your torch and walk 'into' the traffic so drivers can see you, because there are no street-lights.

 Amenities

The cottage is perfect for couples and solo travellers only (sorry no children).   

​

It has a comfortable queen size bed, air-conditioning, inside dining table, well-equipped kitchen, pedestal fan, bathroom with large shower (two shower heads including rain head), insect screens on windows, a small safe and 4 x usb ports. Linen, bath towels, beach towels and spare blankets are provided.  Free WiFi is available to guests.

 

The private deck area is a great space to relax on hot summer days as it provides a great shady area with good air flow, and is also great for those rare wet days as well. The deck has a second dining table, 2 comfortable lounge chairs, coffee table and 2 burner cooking element.

 

The kitchen has everything you might need – small fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, sandwich maker, saucepans, frying pan, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery.  Complimentary starter packs of various teas and  coffee, with starter milk, sugar and cold drinking water in fridge.

 

The bathroom is equipped with starter packs of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash, dishwash liquid, toilet paper and tissues. Refills are at own cost.

 

Off-Grid Living - Solid & Reliable Solar Power

Riley's Retreat offers a rare eco-conscious, tropical island experience in pristine Rarotonga as the entire property is 100% off-grid, powered by solar energy which delivers solid and reliable electricity to both your cottage and your hosts Claire and Darryl's house next door.  In early 2026 Claire and Darryl made the exciting decision to go 'off-grid' (thanks to a wonderful local engineer!) and they havent looked back since. 

 

Close-by

There are two day spa’s close-by (Ocean Escape Resort & Spa and Miri Miri Spa).  

The village of Muri with its famous lagoon, tours, water sports, restaurants, cafes and the popular Muri night market is less than 5

minutes drive. 

There is a rental car company just around the corner, with the next closest being less than 5 minutes drive away in Muri.
